THE PROJECT

The Institute for Pastoral Education of the Holy Archdiocese of Athens, putting into practice the vision of His Grace, the Archbishop of Athens and All Greece, Jerome IIfor the promotion, preservation and educational use of the sacred relics of the 157 Parishes and Holy Monasteries of the Holy Archdiocese of Athens, implements the Act entitled "Digitization of sacred relics of parish churches" (MIS 6003375), which is part of the Digital Transformation Program and cofinanced and co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).

The main objective of the project "Development of 3D Productions" is the development, recording, digitisation and scientific documentation of the complete virtual digital representation of the architectural evolution of the Holy Monastery of Hosios Loukas and the narration of its history, from the first monastic community until today. The digital representation is based on scientific research data that are captured in a dynamic, clear, and documented way to serve multiple purposes, such as research, education, and recreation.

The digital representation of the architectural design and the interior paintings, the architectural and mosaic decoration of the monument constitutes a legacy of information, a vehicle with the help of which the visitor can explore various phases and aspects of the Monastery. During the project multiple scenarios - educational tours (360o tour, virtual reality production for a hemispherical Virtual Reality "Theatre" / virtual cinema, and a short production for virtual masks) are integrated, which will provide the visitor with the opportunity to follow the phases of Byzantine architecture and art in an interactive way. Concurrently, the visitor will receive information about the historical environment, historical, social and religious aspects of Byzantine life, from the Ottoman period to modern times, through the history of this monument, which is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Thus, the project aims not only to represent a glorious moment of the monument, but also to document its evolution and, by extension, the historical, social, and cultural context in which it was created and of which it constitutes a diachronic symbol.
